How to access Google Street View's archive footage (from 2006)

The reversing clock icon hold the secret

Everyone must be familiar with dragging Pegman onto Google Maps and seeing Street View, but did you know they hold historic archive footage going back to 2006.

If it's available you will see the reversing clock image on the top left of the Google Map screen (pictured).

Click the reversing clock icon and you'll see a thumbnail of the historic footage together with a timeline with the available dates highlighted.

Click the date to show a thumbnail of what the Street View looked like back then. Click the thumbnail to use the fullscreen Street View as usual. You will be able to move through the map, viewing the historic footage until you reach an area where that recorded data runs out. Then you will fall back to the latest Street View.
